XTAR VC8S is a powerful smart charger for Li-ion and Ni-MH batteries with 8 independent charging channels, adjustable charging current, and a clear LCD display showing voltage, current, and internal resistance. It also offers capacity measurement (from discharging), a storage mode for storing batteries, and a reactivation function for deeply discharged cells.
8 independent channels and clear LCD display

8 independent channels and a clear LCD display

Charge 1–8 batteries simultaneously in eight independent slots. The dual backlit LCD display shows key data such as voltage, charging current, delivered capacity, and internal resistance of the cells.

Higher charging power up to 3 A (depending on slot occupancy)

Higher charging power up to 3 A (depending on slot occupancy)

The maximum charging current is 3 A, available for two outer channels (only if the middle channels are not used). With 4 batteries inserted, the maximum is 2 A; with 8 cells inserted, the maximum is 1 A.

Storage and capacity measurement (Grad) modes on all channels

Storage and capacity measurement (Grad) modes on all channels

The storage mode helps prepare batteries for safer storage. The Grad function allows you to measure capacity from discharging and, after completion, also shows internal resistance—on all 8 channels.

XTAR is among the renowned manufacturers of quality chargers and accessories for batteries. The VC8S model is an improved version of the popular VC8 and delivers higher performance and broader diagnostic options. It charges 1 to 8 cells simultaneously and, for Li-ion, uses three-stage TC/CC/CV control, while for Ni-MH it uses the 0ΔV and -ΔV methods.

The backlit LCD display continuously shows the charging status and important values (voltage, charging current, delivered charge, internal resistance, error messages, and charge termination). The information can be switched with the “disp” or “mode” button, and charging modes are selected by holding the corresponding buttons longer. The charger also measures internal resistance and can select/“negotiate” the optimal maximum charging current.

“storage” and “grad” modes on the VC8S work on all channels (unlike the previous VC8, where they were limited to CH1–CH4). The “Grad” mode is used for battery capacity measurement (from discharging), and after completion you can read both capacity and internal resistance from the display.

Li-ion charging control TC/CC/CV:

  • TC phase: cells below 2.9 V are “woken up” with a lower current.
  • CC phase: after reaching 2.9 V, it charges with a constant current of 0.25 A to 3 A (depending on power supply and number of cells).
  • CV phase: the current gradually drops until reaching 4.2 V; charging is then completed.

Charged Li-ion cells left inserted will self-discharge; charging will restart when the voltage drops below 3.9 V. For Ni-MH, charging does not resume after a voltage drop due to self-discharge.

The VC8S also has a reactivation function for deeply discharged cells, including cells with 0 V voltage (if they are not irreversibly damaged). The package includes a USB‑C – USB‑A cable; a mains adapter is not included. For power, a charger with QC 3.0 (9 V / 2 A) is required; to fully use the features, a USB‑C PD adapter min. 45 W is recommended. A weaker power source can also be used—the VC8S will adjust the charging current to the available power.
